It’s time to stop counting calories & embrace nourishment.
Calorie counting is a waste of your time.
There is so much more to food and energy that matters.
There is so much more to our body shape and size than an antiquated mathematical equation.
Don’t get me wrong, back in 1918 when calories were first discovered it was a real game changer to learn that humans have a basic energy requirement in order to maintain life.
But nowadays we don’t live like we did in 1918. We don’t grow and produce all of our own food. We get most of what we eat from the shelves of a supermarket. We have fast food outlets and convenience stores on almost every street corner. These places use food science to process the crap out of food so that it barely resembles food anymore and our body knows this.
We get all kinds of messages from the body when we eat fast food; bloated, headache, fatigue, bad skin – ring any bells? There are metabolic consequences for all of the different foods we eat, and these aren’t considered in the calorie equation.
It’s not surprising that when the world became obsessed with calorie counting they decided it was a good idea to reduce fat or create low-fat versions of all our favourite foods. After all proteins and carbs give us roughly 4 calories / gram when fat gives us around 9 calories / gram. So if calorie counting worked it would make sense that a low-fat diet = a healthy, slim human.
But it’s not true.
Let’s use the avocado as an example.
1 ? = 322 calories.
If we just focused on that we’d avoid avos right? Or eat maybe 1/2 a week as a ‘treat’.
But an ? is worth so much more than that. It’s high in fat – around 29g. Fat that helps us build healthy hormones, nervous systems and LOWERS our cholesterol.
But it’s not just the good fats.Avocados also contain 19 other nutrients which are essential for our body to run all it’s systems and processes optimally. This is what is important.
We don’t need to get caught up counting calories. Our bodies do not require precision and mathematical equations to thrive.
We need to learn to pay attention to how our bodies respond to what we feed it. When we respond well – we choose more of that. This is Nourishment.
