Food is not the enemy
I repeat food is NOT the enemy. Ice cream isn’t either BTW.
However, did you know that if you view food as an enemy, then every time you eat – your body will have a physiologic stress response, just as if you were running from a tiger or about to have a car crash?
It’s true. What you are thinking and feeling when you eat makes a huge difference.
This stress response that can lead to:
💩 Poor digestion
💩 Poor assimilation of nutrients
💩 An inability to lose weight
💩 The likelihood of gaining weight
If that’s the impact of being at war with food...just imagine the reverse when you invite a bit of love and relaxation to the table...
We have enough stress in our day-to-day life, and I don’t know about you...but I’d much rather LOVE and enjoy my food.
We all have to eat at least a few times everyday, so why not make eating an opportunity to check out of stress and check back into your body?
The way to break this “eat / see food, go into stress response” pattern is through conscious eating.
What is that though? Well, conscious eating in the short term, is as simple as being present in your body and aware of what you are eating while you actually eat it. Sounds kinda easy, right?
And in the long term, it’s about being responsible for the thoughts, feelings and emotions you have around eating <- this part people usually need a bit of help with.
It’s so worth the effort and investment. I’ve seen time and again, when we understand our relationship with food, we get a greater understanding of how we approach life. Because more often than not, how you are showing up to eat = how you are showing up to other parts of your life.
Would you rather be stressed or satisfied? I know which would get my vote.
